Poconos weekend: how to skip traffic and avoid stressPoconos weekend: how to skip traffic and avoid stress

A winter Friday drive from New York to the Poconos is always a gamble. What usually takes 90 minutes can easily stretch to four hours on busy weekends. The mountains are typically about 15°C (25°F) colder - rain in Queens often turns into sheets of black ice, where standard sedans struggle.

To make sure your weekend doesn’t end with a tow truck call, we’ve put together a guide from Drivo with tips on routes and preparation.

The reality of winter weekends

Winter is peak season in the Poconos. Watch out for two main issues:

  • Gridlock: the I-80 often jams up by Friday noon. Average speeds can drop to 15 mph. If you leave at 5:00 PM, you might not reach your hotel until midnight.
  • Weather surprises: in the Delaware Water Gap, «black ice» is common - a transparent layer of ice invisible to headlights. Without All-Wheel Drive (AWD), a car can lose traction even on slight turns.

How to get there: 3 proven routes

Your choice depends on your GPS and your tolerance for adventure.

1. I-80 West (the classic)

The fastest way, but the most stressful during a storm. The Delaware Water Gap. The road narrows, and the river creates thick fog. Any minor accident here blocks traffic for hours.

Our tip: if you see «red» on the George Washington Bridge, look for a detour immediately.

2. NJ-46 and NJ-23 (the stable alternative)

This route goes through New Jersey towns. There are traffic lights, but the flow is steady. During heavy snow, these roads are plowed first because they are vital for local residents.

3. US-206 North (the scenic route)

This path leads through the woods toward the Dingmans Ferry Bridge.

Details. few trucks, but plenty of wildlife. At dusk, deer in Pennsylvania are a real hazard. Keep it at 45 mph and stay alert.

Where to go. Poconos highlights

Action: Camelback and Jack Frost

  • Camelback: features the largest snow tubing park in the US. You must book at least a week in advance-tickets sell out fast.
  • Jack Frost: the choice for those who want to ski rather than wait in lines. The trails are wide, and the crowds from NYC are smaller.

Atmosphere: Jim Thorpe

Often called the «Switzerland of America.» Its Victorian architecture and mountain backdrop are highly photogenic.

  • To do: take the Reading & Northern vintage train. The cars are heated, and the views of the Lehigh River Gorge are the best in the state.
  • Parking: finding a spot downtown is nearly impossible. Head straight to the municipal lot by the train station (County Parking Lot).

Nature: Bushkill Falls

In winter, the waterfalls turn into massive ice sculptures. Wear boots with a good grip - the wooden walkways get very slippery.

Winter-proofing your car

Temperatures in the Poconos often drop to -20°C (-4°F) in January and February. A standard city checkup isn't enough.

  1. Refill washer fluid: highways are treated with salt, which dries into a white film on your windshield. Use a fluid rated for -20°F.
  2. Check tire pressure: cold air causes pressure to drop. If the warning light comes on, stop at a Wawa or Sheetz to top them off. Under-inflated tires increase your braking distance on ice by 20%.
  3. Keep the tank half full: Don't wait for the low fuel light. Gas stations can be dozens of miles apart in the mountains. A fuller tank also adds weight for better traction.

Renting without overpaying

If you don't own an AWD vehicle, book one in advance. At JFK or Newark (EWR), busy weekends often leave only rear-wheel-drive cars available, which are useless on icy mountain inclines.

  • For drivers 21+: large corporations often deny younger drivers or hide extra fees. At Drivo, we understand the situation: we provide sedans and SUVs to drivers 21 and older with a flat «Young Driver» fee of about $25 per day. No surprises at the counter.
  • Off-airport locations: offices 10 minutes from the terminal (like our EWR location) are often 30% cheaper because they skip airport taxes. We provide a free shuttle so you don't have to wait in line at the terminal.
